Hey all you envatotarians.

Fun fact: the envato marketplaces currently run against ruby 1.8.7.

Funner fact: by tomorrow afternoon we’ll be running ruby 1.9.2.

Between those two facts there’s going to be a big marketplace deployment. We’re planning around noon Thursday. We’ve been working hard on a deployment strategy that will have minimal downtime, but the site will be down for a little while. In addition to the main downtime, there will be some delays in new items being indexed for search, files being uploaded to FTP being processed, and a few other background supporting things that we’re going to upgrade independently of taking the site down.

I’ll post back in this thread when we start, and finish the upgrade. If tomorrow afternoon you discover any strange bugs (especially around how the site “looks”) please post back into this thread so we can address them ASAP .

It’s the underlying language runtime that the marketplaces run on. For those that didn’t know we use the Ruby on Rails framework to run the marketplaces. Ruby is the programming language/runtime, and rails is the code you add on top to build web application in.

The version of Ruby and Rails we use is starting to get really out of date and so we need to upgrade to kind of “keep up” with feature upgrades and bug-fixes and the like.

There’s a big difference between Ruby 1.8 and 1.9, so it’s a fairly complicated upgrade with the risk of introducing subtle bugs. We’ve been testing a lot in the Melbourne office, but we just thought it was risky enough to give you guys some fair warning.

If you know js/java that not that hard to learn Ruby& Rails, fact is you can do it very easily online and get certified, upgrading to a new version is always a risky move. Any way interesting to learn Ruby& Rails which frankly companies always looking for good Ruby& Rails nerds’ you can start your way here. http://tryruby.org/levels/1/challenges/0 .

p.s.

John don’t worry your position at Envato is safe :P
